Ways to check your knitting gauge and determine pattern measurements.

Knitting Gauge & Pattern Sizing
At Lucas Yarns, we make sure your final garment fits beautifully. That all starts with understanding knitting tension—also called gauge.
1. Start With the Size Chart
Choose the right size from our size chart. All our patterns are designed to match those finished measurements.
2. How Gauge Affects Stitch Count
Let’s say your gauge is 20 stitches over 10 cm:
- 1 cm = 2 stitches (20 ÷ 10)
- If your pattern requires 48 cm width → 48 × 2 = 96 stitches
If you knit 22 stitches per 10 cm, your piece will end up 5 cm narrower!
3. Make a Gauge Swatch
- Cast on more stitches than required for 10 cm.
- Knit slightly more than 10 cm in height using the suggested needle.
- Measure the width & height of 10x10 cm in stockinette stitch.
If:
- You have more than 20 stitches → switch to larger needles.
- You have less than 20 stitches → switch to smaller needles.
4. Needle Size Is Personal
Everyone’s knitting style is different. Use whatever needle size helps you get the correct tension—even if it’s different from the pattern suggestion.
5. Try Different Needle Types
Wood, bamboo, metal, or plastic—each material can affect your tension. If one doesn’t work, try another. What matters most is that your swatch matches the gauge.
Pro Tip: Always keep an eye on your tension as you work—consistency is key!
